Flip Flappers Blu-ray Media Review Episode 13

by Yumiko

A mother’s love can never be replaced.

Donning their newest transformations, Cocona, Papika, and those closest to them begin to beat back “Mimi”. Unwilling to let Cocona go, “Mimi” undergoes her own transformation. Vowing to destroy everything in her path, Cocona and Papika are pushed back once more. Nonetheless, they will never fall separately again. After formally declaring their love for one another, this will not be their last adventure. Diving straight at “Mimi”, Pure Illusion begins to break down. While this isn’t the end for Pure Illusion, Papika decides to stay with Mimi. However, Cocona won’t simply be sent off on her own. Lost on her way back, she searches all over for Papika. Believing Papika to be lost, Cocona returns to the spot where they first met. Awaiting her there was the friend that promised to never stop going on adventures with her. This journey may be over, but the adventures into Pure Illusion shall continue.

I have to be honest, I love Flip Flappers. I’ve watched this show fully four times now, and it never fails to capture me. Even with that said, let’s take a closer look at what we’ve covered here. Without a doubt, the bread and butter of Flip Flappers were the adventures into Pure Illusion. While some were stronger than others, I don’t believe a single one felt weak. Episode 3 in particular shall always hold a special spot for me. After having watched that episode more than a dozen times, it just gets better with each view. Now, one could go either way with Cocona’s “mother” being the endgame. Understandably this is where the adventuring takes a hit, but those in charge of the story had this planned from the start. This show laid hints of what was to come from the beginning, so you were required to think a little bit with this one. I know we preach; “Don’t think, imagine”, but sometimes a little brain power is required to enjoy something fully.

Creativity and inspiration is what makes Flip Flappers recognizable. Although none of the settings in Pure Illusion were completely original, 3Hz was able to give them a unique anime twist. On top that, they spared no expense at keep it consistent throughout. From start to finish, we’re blessed with top of the line animation work. Additionally, it’s not always about the action, and that showed during several bonding scenes. Being able to visually show Cocona and Papika’s growing relationship is one of the core strengths of anime. It doesn’t always just have to be words.

This one shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it’s a solid 10 from me. An original of this caliber is a rare treat, and I hate to see it go here. Nonetheless, we can rest easy knowing that Cocona and Papika will continue their adventures. We may not be able to see it, though they’re out there in Pure Illusion having a blast. Anyhow, let’s get to it. Enjoy one last dive into Pure Illusion!
