Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. Blu-ray Media Review Episode 12

by Yumiko

They never stood a chance.

With only a single life point remaining, Maple was forced to reveal her guild’s final trump card. The demon within has come out to play, and not even Payne can deal with this monster. After annihilating those of Holy Sword, Sally announced they would be pushing forward with the last phase of their plan. Seeing how everyone now knows about Maple’s Atrocity form, they only have one path moving forward. In order to firmly secure a spot within the top ten, they’ll be putting Maple’s power on full display. A night like no other has been seen within NewWorld Online. Even with two event days remaining, the devs were forced to end the event early. As the dust settled, there were only six guilds left standing.

In the aftermath of the fourth event, Maple has become quite the sensation. While normally such feats would call for a nurf, the dev team will be taking a hands off approach. Maple’s achievements have drawn many new players to the game. There’s now an ongoing competition to be the first to defeat her. Regardless of now being a target, Maple Tree celebrated taking third place in the fourth event. However, Maple invited a few familiar faces to the party. Though they may be enemies on the battlefield, those in charge of Flame Emperors and Holy Sword can be friends with Maple Tree outside of events. Until the next big event comes around, Maple shall be going on adventures with even more friends.

Story: 7/10

This entire story can be boiled down to the rule of cool, and how she got away with it because of cuteness. Yes, it’s exciting to see what Maple will be able to pull off next, but don’t expect anything other than that from this show. Sometimes her best friend, Sally, will get to do something exciting, though it always goes back to Maple. Even Maple’s own guild is just kinda there for the ride. Despite the heavy Maple focus, this was an entertaining one. Not every anime pulls off VRMMOs well. Due to this story focusing on the action and comedy bits, it didn’t fall into the traps of its predecessors. As I’ve said many times in the past, if you can’t pull off a believable serious tale, then just have some fun.

Art/Animation: 7/10

Don’t get me wrong here, Silver Link did an amazing job given that this show requires a lot of animation. There’s action to be found in every single episode. However, the quality of these fights varied heavily. The first half contained a fair amount of CG usage, and later on fights were borderline slideshows. Episode 11 was the lowest point of this show, but there were some highlights here and there. As for the character art, they ensured the cuteness was always spot on. There were very few issues to be found. Additionally, it should be noted that Silver Link was able to pull off a very colorful world. NewWorld Online could be quite beautiful at times.

Enjoyment: 8.5/10

The barrier of entry for this show is rather low. You either love Maple or you don’t. Since her cuteness caught me from episode one, I’ve enjoyed watching her many feats. It takes some suspension of disbelief, but Maple never failed to entertain. Whether she was a flying fortress, an angel, a mecha, or a demon, Maple knew how to put on a show.

Hopefully many of you enjoyed coverage of this show. This was originally just a replacement till Black Clover came back. I didn’t even plan to do more than 6 episodes, but nothing ever goes as planned. Now, I’m sure many of you have heard at this point, but this show will be receiving a season two. That’s right, Maple and friends have many more adventures to be animated. Anyhow, I reward BOFURI with an overall score of 7.5. Enjoy eliminating the competition!

Our luck had to run out at some point. That’s it for Maple here, but look forward to her second season in the future!
